I hunger for many things other than God. Too many. But the song says, “You are all my heart is really longing for”. C.S. Lewis helped me see that these realities are not mutually incompatible. In “The Weight of Glory”, he speaks of the many idols we substitute for our one true longing. “But they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, the news from a country we have never visited.” Reading this, I came to see in a moment that every yearning in me, no matter how misguided, is actually a weak expression of my truest and deepest desire for the one who waits at the end of all our searching.
Anything I could ever want.
Everything I could ever need.
Every longing in my heart
planted in me from the start.
Every hope I hold for what my life will be.
Ev’rything I could ever seek.
Anything I could ever dream.
Every hunger, ev’ry thirst
To this moment from the first
Are all leading me to where my searching ends.
For You are all
My heart is really longing for and
You are all
My soul will ever need.
You are all
The meaning I am searching for and
You are all
That satisfies the deepest part of me
Any peace I could ever find
Every grace I could ever need
Every pleasure that won’t pass
Every treasure that will last
All are waiting for me at my journey’s end.
