I wrote “To You” in the fall of 2018 for a gathering of Christian leaders. During my sabbath prior to the conference, I read these words. “Not to us, LORD, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness” (Ps. 115:1). I was impressed with the importance of us affirming this same posture of heart with one voice. It seemed to me that it would be good and grounding to dream together of a day when our name, our fame and even the earthly memory of our lives would have passed away while “Your steadfast love will still be told & Your faithfulness will still be sung”.
In this moment in human history, when the world has been brought to its knees at the hands of a microscopic virus, the posture of heart of this song takes on new meaning.
Not to us but to your name
Be all glory that is due
Great in faithfulness and love
All acclaim belongs to you
May any fame that comes our way
May any name by which we’re known
Fade from all memory with the years
All glory be to you alone
To you, to you
Be all honor and all praise
To you, to you
From now on through endless days
Across the centuries of time
From age to age and shore to shore
The story of your love will run
And will endure forever more
And in a hundred years from now
When every one of us is gone
Your steadfast love will still be told
Your faithfulness will still be sung
