Prodigal’s Hymn

This is not a story song based on a parable that Jesus told. This is my own story, and perhaps yours. Whatever else my capture my attention and my heart through the rest of my life, nothing will compare to my wonder at the lavishness of God’s love for me. The word “prodigal” mean extravagant or lavish. It’s used to describe the son because of his wasteful, reckless living. It’s been suggested that it better suits the father because of his wasteful reckless loving. Though I’ll never understand it and never fully accept it, I’m glad that it’s so. John writes, “How great is the Father’s love for us that he should call us his sons and his daughters … and that’s what we are!” “How great” indeed!

There is power in the cross
Healing for our ailing
Light for every sinner lost
Grace for every failing
There I’ll run and there I’ll hide
There I’ll find my freedom
There I have been justified
By the blood of God’s own son
By the blood of God’s own son

I had wandered far from home
Turned my heart from heaven
There I squandered all the love
I had once been given
Still He loved me even then
Still He searched and sought me
To the cross He bore my sin
Where with love He bought me
Where with love He bought me

I know not a greater good
Than the cross of calvary
Where upon this cross of wood
Jesus, suffered for me
There He bled and there He died
There He paid my ransom
Every grace He did provide
Purchased my redemption
Purchased my redemption

I will glory in the cross
This my greatest treasure
I am found who once was lost
Cherished beyond measure
There can be no greater gain
Than to have been chosen
By Him who endured the pain
So to bring me home again
So to bring me home again

I will boast in Christ alone
Who is my salvation
I will stake all that I own
And my reputation
For it was for me he came
Humbled as a servant
I for him must do the same
Until all my life is spent
Until all my life is spent
