It’s important that from time to time worship songwriters write songs for an audience of one. This is one of those songs. I wrote it in response to my Father’s love for me. I never intended for anyone else to hear it. With great hesitation I pulled it out once to share with a group in a context where it seemed to me to be “just right”. They sang it like it was their own. Since then I’ve occasionally brought it out of the closet for other groups. It’s rather ironic that it should have become the title cut for an album.
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m seldom at a loss for words. I also have a deep love for the gift of words that allows us to experience and express the life we’ve also been given. Yet despite all the many, many words that I love and can readily express every expression of gratitude and adoration falls of saying what my heart longs to say to the one who has always loved me and who always will.
Father, we are so loved by you
I’m so thankful for all you’ve done
Calling my name when I’d wandered far from home
Searching my night by the lantern of your love
I love you more than my words can say
No one else could ever begin to take your place
I need you more than the air I breathe
All my life, all I have is in you
Jesus, how could I hope to say
Thank you for all that you’ve done for me
Giving your life as a ransom for my sin
Washing me clean, setting me free to live again
