Many of the songs I’ve written were conceived as expressions of congregational worship in response to a message preached from a particular biblical text. This is such a song. The text was Genesis 2. My pastor and dear friend, Jim Stevens, was sharing his reflections from his preparations for his upcoming sermon. He was struck by God’s posture as he formed man from the dust of the earth. It was almost as though he was kneeling down.
The image stuck with me. God kneeling and becoming soiled on behalf of humanity. The foreshadowing was not lost on me. Neither was the realization that God was fashioning the form of the incarnation as he was forming us.
You knelt down and reached out Your hands
You created man from the dust of this earth.
Humbly You came and you were broken for me
All that I might live in You
And that You would receive,
From all that I am, for all that You are,
Glory and praise!
From before time began
One plan You ordained, one purpose remains,
